Choosing the Right UV Finish

Flood UV coating applies a uniform high-gloss finish across the entire surface of your print. It enhances color vibrancy, adds scratch resistance, and gives your pieces a polished, professional appearance. Flood UV is the right choice when you want every element to shine equally — ideal for photo-heavy designs, full-bleed imagery, and pieces where consistent gloss is the goal. Spot UV applies the coating selectively, creating areas of gloss that contrast against the matte surface beneath. This is the premium choice for designs that feature a prominent logo, headline, or graphic element you want to highlight. The contrast between matte and gloss creates a tactile dimension that people notice immediately. Spot UV is our signature finish and the option most favored by brand-conscious clients. Not sure which to choose? Request a free sample pack. Holding both finishes in your hand is the fastest way to decide which one serves your brand best.

Setting Up Spot UV Artwork

Spot UV requires an additional mask layer in your file that tells our production team exactly where to apply the coating. Create a separate layer (or separate file) with solid black (K:100) shapes in the areas where you want UV coating. Everything else should be white — indicating no coating. The mask must be the exact same dimensions as your print file, with the same bleed. Alignment is critical: even a small misregistration between the mask and the print can create visible issues. Our prepress team reviews every spot UV file for alignment before production begins. For detailed instructions with visual examples, visit our File Guidelines page. If you are working with a designer, share our spot UV specs with them — they will know exactly what we need.
